Serengeti National Park

Home to the Great Migration and Africa's largest lion population, Serengeti National Park is the definitive safari on Tanzania's Northern Circuit — endless plains stretching as far as the eye can see.

Decorative Wave Shape

Overview

Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's most famous safari destination, home to the Great Migration and a highlight of many Northern Circuit itineraries, set in the country's far north roughly 325 km (about 8 hours by road, or a short scheduled flight) from Arusha. Established in 1940 and covering 14,763 km² — one of the largest protected ecosystems in Africa — the park takes its name from the Maasai word for “endless plains,” and few places live up to a name so literally. Four distinct areas shape the park: the treeless southern plains around Ndutu, the riverine forests of the Western Corridor, the wooded north bordering Kenya's Maasai Mara, and the wildlife-rich Seronera Valley at its heart. Our 7-day From Baobabs to the Serengeti itinerary focuses on Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley, prized for exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Scenery

The Serengeti's scenery shifts dramatically across its three regions. In the south, short-grass plains stretch to the horizon around Ndutu, broken only by rocky granite outcrops called kopjes — Simba Kopje, one of the most famous, is widely credited as an inspiration for Pride Rock in Disney's The Lion King. The Western Corridor follows the Grumeti River through denser riverine forest, while the north's rolling, wooded hills run along the Mara River as it nears the Kenyan border. At its heart, the Seronera Valley combines rivers, swamps, and open grassland, making it one of the most reliably scenic and wildlife-dense stretches of the entire park.

Dry and rainy seasons

Climate

The Serengeti runs warm year-round, with the clearest, coolest conditions during the dry season. Expect dry-season days around 26°C (79°F), dropping to a brisk 14°C (57°F) at night — cold fronts between June and September can occasionally push early mornings close to freezing, so pack warm layers for game drives. Through the wetter months, days edge up slightly to around 27°C (81°F) with nights around 15°C (59°F).

Dry seasons:
June to October
Rainy seasons:
November to December (short rains) and March to May (long rains), with a dry transition in January–February
Rain clouds moving across an East African savanna
Activities

Things to do in Serengeti National Park

The Great Migration draws most travelers to Serengeti National Park, but the list of things to do here goes well beyond river crossings and game drives — ballooning, kopje walks, and Maasai cultural visits all round it out.

Game Drives
Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley is nicknamed the “Big Cat Capital of Africa,” with lion, leopard, and cheetah sightings possible in a single day, alongside elephant, buffalo, hippo, and giraffe.
Great Migration River Crossings
Seasonally, watch wildebeest and zebra cross crocodile-filled rivers in one of nature's most dramatic wildlife spectacles.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
Dawn balloon flights drift silently over the plains, typically finished with a champagne bush breakfast.
Kopje Exploration
Visit granite outcrops like Simba Kopje for sweeping views over the plains and reliably good lion sightings.
Maasai Village Visits
Guided cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities cover traditional dwellings, dress, and daily life.
Walking Safaris
Available at select lodges, guided walks offer an on-foot perspective on the park's smaller wildlife, birdlife, and flora.

Best time to visit

Unlike parks that empty out for months at a time, Serengeti National Park rewards a visit in almost any season — the question is less whether to go than which part of the Great Migration you want to see. June to October and January to February are generally considered the best time to visit Serengeti National Park, for the dry season's easy game viewing and the Ndutu Plains' calving season respectively.

High season (Peak Tourist Periods):
June to October, and to a lesser extent January to February. The dry months bring the Migration's dramatic river crossings to the north, while January–February draws travelers to the southern Ndutu Plains for calving season and its accompanying predator action — both periods see the park's highest visitor numbers and should be booked well ahead.
Low season (Less Busy Months):
March to May, and November. The long and short rains can make some roads harder going, but Central Serengeti's year-round rivers keep resident wildlife — including its famous lion and leopard populations — in place regardless of season, and rates are typically lower.

Wildlife Spotlights

Few places on Earth pack in wildlife quite like the Serengeti does. The Great Migration is the headline act, but the park's resident population — led by Africa's largest concentration of lions — is just as remarkable, migration season or not.

Big Five & Predators
Home to more lions than anywhere else in Africa (over 3,000), plus leopard and reintroduced African wild dog; the Eastern black rhino survives here in small numbers, alongside healthy elephant and buffalo populations.
Great Migration Species
An estimated 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra move through the park annually on a roughly 800 km circuit, trailed by cheetah, hyena, and other predators.
Birds
Over 500 species have been recorded, from raptors patrolling the plains to waterbirds along the Grumeti and Mara rivers.

A safari lodge is a nature-focused accommodation near wildlife-rich areas, offering a blend of comfort, modern facilities, eco-conscious design, and access to safari activities such as game drives and guided walks.

Absolutely! Safari accommodations prioritize safety, often featuring security measures such as fences, night guards, and protocols for wildlife encounters. If you specifically prefer a fenced lodge, please let us know when booking, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Most high-end and mid-range lodges provide electricity, usually through solar power or generators. Budget lodges may use lanterns or have limited generator hours. In more remote areas, lodges may not offer 24-hour electricity and may turn off their generators between midnight and dawn or while guests are on game drives. If you need 24-hour electricity, please specify this when booking, and our team will assist you accordingly.

Most mid-range and high-end lodges offer Wi-Fi, though it is often limited to common areas and may be slower in remote locations.

This depends on your group size and destination. In Uganda, peak season runs from December to February and June to August, with quieter months from March to May and September to November. In Tanzania, peak season runs from June to October, with a shorter peak in January and February; the long rains from March to May and short rains from November to December are quieter. We recommend booking at least six months ahead for larger groups and peak dates, especially July to September in the Northern Serengeti.
