Itinerary overview

This 8-day safari goes further off the beaten path than our other Tanzania itineraries, adding a genuine cultural encounter to the classic wildlife circuit. After game drives through Tarangire's elephant herds and baobab groves, you'll spend a full day at Lake Eyasi with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and the Datoga — two of East Africa's last indigenous tribal communities — before continuing on to the Serengeti's endless plains and the Big Five of the Ngorongoro Crater. It's a trip built for travelers who want their safari paired with real cultural immersion, not just game drives.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant herds and picturesque landscape dotted with ancient baobab trees. The Tarangire River is the park's only permanent water source, drawing wildlife from across its 1,096 square miles of protected grasslands — wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elands, gerenuks, lions, and leopards all pass through. It's also a haven for birdlife, with over 500 species recorded, including yellow-collared lovebirds, rufous-tailed weavers, and kori bustards. Less crowded than some of Tanzania's more famous parks, Tarangire rewards visitors with a genuine sense of wilderness.

Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a stunning soda lake beneath the Eyasi Escarpment on its northwestern side. Far less visited than Tanzania's marquee parks, it offers a genuine wilderness escape and a rare chance to meet two of the region's last indigenous hunter-gatherer and pastoralist communities — the Hadzabe and the Nilotic-speaking Datoga. Visitors can walk with the Hadzabe as they track game and forage in the bush, and visit Datoga homesteads to see traditional blacksmithing and herding. Walks around the lakeshore also turn up local wildlife and a rich variety of birdlife.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is Africa's ultimate safari destination, its name meaning “endless plains” in the local language — and with 14,763 km² of savanna stretching to the horizon, it lives up to it. The Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley is famed for prime, year-round wildlife viewing: lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena hunt across open grassland dotted with granite outcrops, while giraffe, impala, waterbuck, buffalo, and elephant gather along its network of rivers and streams. It's also home to part of the great wildebeest and zebra migration and has featured in countless wildlife documentaries.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Its fertile crater floor supports a permanent, high-density population of wildlife — prides of lions, herds of Cape buffalo, elephants, zebras, Thomson's gazelles, and spotted hyenas roam freely, while the elusive Black Rhino gives visitors a genuine shot at completing the Big Five. Hundreds of bird species gather around the crater's small lakes, and the surrounding rim offers breathtaking views over this natural amphitheater of wildlife.

Most high-end and mid-range lodges provide electricity, usually through solar power or generators. Budget lodges may use lanterns or have limited generator hours. In more remote areas, lodges may not offer 24-hour electricity and may turn off their generators between midnight and dawn or while guests are on game drives. Most mid-range and high-end lodges offer Wi-Fi, though it is often limited to common areas and may be slower in remote locations.

This depends on your group size and destination. In Uganda, peak season runs from December to February and June to August, with quieter months from March to May and September to November. In Tanzania, peak season runs from June to October, with a shorter peak in January and February; the long rains from March to May and short rains from November to December are quieter. We recommend booking at least six months ahead for larger groups and peak dates, especially July to September in the Northern Serengeti.
