Locations

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant herds and picturesque landscape dotted with ancient baobab trees. The Tarangire River is the park's only permanent water source, drawing wildlife from across its 1,096 square miles of protected grasslands — wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elands, gerenuks, lions, and leopards all pass through. It's also a haven for birdlife, with over 500 species recorded, including yellow-collared lovebirds, rufous-tailed weavers, and kori bustards. Less crowded than some of Tanzania's more famous parks, Tarangire rewards visitors with a genuine sense of wilderness.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is famed for its tree-climbing lions and huge troops of baboons roaming its groundwater forest. The park sits beneath the dramatic Rift Valley Escarpment and surrounds a vast soda lake, home to buffalo, warthogs, giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, and flocks of flamingos. Its shallow Hippo Pool offers excellent chances for hippo sightings, and the surrounding views over the Rift Valley are some of the most spectacular in northern Tanzania. Manyara is also an easy park to combine with cultural activities, like a visit to the nearby village of Mto Wa Mbu.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Its fertile crater floor supports a permanent, high-density population of wildlife — prides of lions, herds of Cape buffalo, elephants, zebras, Thomson's gazelles, and spotted hyenas roam freely, while the elusive Black Rhino gives visitors a genuine shot at completing the Big Five. Hundreds of bird species gather around the crater's small lakes, and the surrounding rim offers breathtaking views over this natural amphitheater of wildlife.

Northern Serengeti

The Serengeti is Africa's ultimate safari destination, its name meaning “endless plains” in the local language — and with 14,763 km² of savanna stretching to the horizon, it lives up to it. The Central Serengeti's Seronera Valley is famed for prime, year-round wildlife viewing: lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena hunt across open grassland dotted with granite outcrops, while giraffe, impala, waterbuck, buffalo, and elephant gather along its network of rivers and streams. Further north, along the Mara River near the Kenyan border, the Serengeti puts on its most famous spectacle — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunging across crocodile-infested waters during the Great Migration (seasonal), against a backdrop of rolling savanna and riverine woodland.

Zanzibar Island

Off Tanzania's coast in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is a world away from the savanna: white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and the winding coral-stone streets of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped by centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, and European history. Stone Town's sights include Christ Church (Anglican) Cathedral, built on the site of the old slave market, the Sultan's Palace, the Old Fort, and the famous hand-carved Zanzibar doors, alongside bustling spice and produce markets. Beyond the town, the island's east coast is lined with resort beaches ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, with excursions on offer to Prison Island and the Jozani Forest, home to the rare red colobus monkey.

Most high-end and mid-range lodges provide electricity, usually through solar power or generators. Budget lodges may use lanterns or have limited generator hours. In more remote areas, lodges may not offer 24-hour electricity and may turn off their generators between midnight and dawn or while guests are on game drives. This depends on your group size and destination. In Uganda, peak season runs from December to February and June to August, with quieter months from March to May and September to November. In Tanzania, peak season runs from June to October, with a shorter peak in January and February; the long rains from March to May and short rains from November to December are quieter. We recommend booking at least six months ahead for larger groups and peak dates, especially July to September in the Northern Serengeti.
