Northern Serengeti

Where the Great Migration crosses the crocodile-filled Mara River, Northern Serengeti is Tanzania's front-row seat to safari's single most dramatic spectacle.

Decorative Wave Shape

Overview

Northern Serengeti is the far-flung, Mara River-straddling corner of Serengeti National Park, wedged between the park's Central Serengeti heartland and Kenya's Maasai Mara, roughly 3-5 hours by road from Seronera or an 11-hour drive (not recommended) from Arusha - most visitors fly directly into Kogatende airstrip instead. This is the stage for the Great Migration's single most dramatic moment: hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunging across the Mara River's crocodile-infested waters, typically between July and October, though the exact timing shifts every year and no crossing can ever be guaranteed. Beyond the river drama, the region's rolling hills, granite kopjes, and open woodland - taking in sub-areas like the Lamai Wedge, Wogakuria, and the Lobo Valley - support healthy year-round populations of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, with a fraction of the vehicle traffic found further south.

Scenery

The Northern Serengeti trades the flat, treeless plains of the south for a hillier, greener landscape - rolling grass-covered hills, scattered granite kopjes, and pockets of acacia and terminalia woodland that thicken into riverine forest along the Mara itself. The Lamai Wedge, tucked north of the river against the Kenyan border, is open and sparsely vegetated with almost no fixed vehicle tracks, while Wogakuria's grasslands and the valleys around Lobo add rockier, more varied terrain further south. The Mara River cuts through it all, its steep banks and pooling hippos and crocodiles giving the whole region a wilder, more dramatic feel than the Serengeti's central plains.

Dry and rainy seasons

Climate

Northern Serengeti shares the same broad climate as the rest of the park, so it's the calendar that matters here more than the thermometer - when the migration arrives is what actually decides whether a visit delivers river crossings, not the weather itself. Dry-season days run around 26C (79F), dropping to a brisk 14C (57F) at night, with cold snaps between June and September occasionally pushing early mornings close to freezing, so pack layers for early starts at the river. The wetter months bring slightly warmer days near 27C (81F) and nights around 15C (59F), though few visitors head this far north outside migration season.

Dry seasons:
June to October
Rainy seasons:
November to December (short rains) and March to May (long rains), with a dry transition in January-February

Things to do in Northern Serengeti

Northern Serengeti's list of things to do centers on one event - the Mara River crossings - but a front-row seat here still isn't guaranteed, since no guide can promise when or if the herds will cross on any given day.

Mara River Crossing Vigils
Position at a known crossing point and wait, sometimes for hours, for wildebeest and zebra to plunge across river stretches patrolled by some of the Mara's largest crocodiles.
Predator Tracking in Wogakuria
Open grassland and terminalia woodland here hold some of the north's best cheetah sightings, alongside resident lion and leopard.
Lamai Wedge Game Drives
Explore this quiet, near-trackless corner of the park north of the river, with far fewer vehicles than the Serengeti's central circuit.
Kogatende & Lobo Valley Exploration
Visit the historic Kogatende ranger post, once a colonial-era anti-poaching fort, and the kopje-studded valleys around Lobo, home to some of the north's largest resident lion prides.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
Where seasonally available, dawn balloon flights drift over the plains and river for a bird's-eye view of the migration below.

Best time to visit

Northern Serengeti runs on the migration's calendar more than any other part of the park - most visitors come specifically for the river crossings, which cluster from July through September and taper off through October, though the exact dates shift every year and no operator can guarantee a crossing on any single visit.

High season (Peak Tourist Periods):
July to October, peaking in August-September. This is when the migration is most likely to be in the north and crossing the Mara River, so camps here book up especially far ahead - some of the most sought-after beds on the entire Northern Circuit.
Low season (Less Busy Months):
November to May, with June as a shoulder month. The migration moves south, so resident wildlife viewing continues but the signature river crossings aren't on offer; itineraries that don't specifically target crossing season generally route through Central Serengeti instead.

Wildlife Spotlights

Come outside migration season and Northern Serengeti doesn't go quiet - crocodiles still patrol the Mara River, cheetahs still hunt Wogakuria's grasslands, and resident lion prides hold their territory year-round regardless of where the wildebeest are.

Great Migration & River Crossings
Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra funnel through the region on their way to and from the Maasai Mara, crossing the Mara River's crocodile-patrolled waters at several traditional crossing points.
Predators
Resident lion prides, leopard, and cheetah are present year-round, with Wogakuria's open grassland and terminalia woodland a particular cheetah stronghold.
Mara River Wildlife
Nile crocodiles and hippo pods hold territory along the river itself, with elephant, buffalo, giraffe, topi, and eland common on the surrounding plains.

This depends on your group size and destination. In Uganda, peak season runs from December to February and June to August, with quieter months from March to May and September to November.
